A Personal Mission

Three years ago, we started Ultralight with a goal of unlocking more innovation in medtech. The COVID-19 pandemic opened our eyes to the importance of the medical device industry. 

As we spent time with innovative medical device teams, we were surprised about two things. First, the nature of products was changing rapidly such that medical devices increasingly included software and algorithmic components. This expanded their potential applications and the imagination of builders, and also how the devices were built. And second, the software tools that these teams were leveraging for their day-to-day work had not evolved to meet their needs. The builders were spending countless hours each week on tasks that could be simplified by purpose-built software.

Built for Innovators

As a healthcare entrepreneur myself, I was particularly drawn to the innovation happening among startups and new age devices like SaMD & SiMD. Outside of myself, our team was full of software engineers who had empathy for the software teams in medtech that were bogged down in documentation hell.

So we began working with a handful of medical device customers as design partners. We shadowed their work and asked “what sucks” about the day-to-day work. We consulted with industry experts, from quality and regulatory to engineering and product stakeholders. And we built and iterated on solutions with very tight feedback loops.

Because we listened to our customers, we were quickly able to deliver solutions that provided value.  

The premise behind our software is simple. Previously, medical device teams were disorganized in even the most common tasks like writing requirements and conducting testing. They were also confused about how to meet compliance requirements like setting up a quality system and generating design history. This was especially painful for early stage teams, and those building software-enabled devices.

In just a few years, Ultralight was able to build a powerful yet easy-to-use platform that fully supports quality management, requirements management, software release processes, and much more. We’ve had the privilege of helping dozens of medical device innovators more efficiently and effectively manage their day-to-day work and bring their innovations to market. And they’ve helped us design their dream software.

Scaling Impact

Now that we’ve cut our teeth with dozens of innovative customers, we’re ready to dramatically scale our impact. We always  wonder about the thousands of medical device teams who are still struggling with their existing processes, and who would benefit from the speed and simplicity of Ultralight’s software.

Amidst a rapidly evolving  medical device industry with so much potential at stake,  we wanted to figure out how to serve the most innovators as quickly as possible.  But you don’t build trust and distribution overnight.

The medical device industry is already massively important, but it also has upside that many regularly overlook. It’s great to join forces with a team that understands and appreciates the industry as much as we do.
